Hora

Hora is the main village and it is where Anemomilos Boutique Hotel is located. Recently CNN listed Hora as one of the 7 most beautiful villages of the entire Europe! Τhe most photographed church of Folegandros, the church of Panaghia, rests on the top of the Hora hill, a short walk from Anemomilos. It is said that the invaluable icon of the Virgin Mary (Panaghia) which was once stolen by pirates, managed to return to the island through way of the sea after the boat carrying it had sunk. The old settlement of Kastro is as inviting as it looks in all these trademark pictures of Folegandros and features whitewashed houses that haven’t stopped being inhabited ever since their establishment in the medieval times. At nights, the cobblestone streets host the vibrant hum of the people visiting the numerous restaurants and bars.

Ano Meria

Ano Meria is a perfect place for a day-visit visit if you’re looking for a more rural experience. It is home to the Folegandros Folk Museum, which is basically a beautiful farmhouse (“themonia”) with walls made of stone and mud, without the use of plaster, so as not to be discerned by the pirates in the past. Exhibits include the remains of an olive press, a primitive wine press, daily life utensils, local costumes, an old loom and many more items which are interesting to see and make the visit to the museum a wonderful experience.
